Dialogue with Izumita Yukiya
Searching for the "Just Right Moment" with Clay
During our trip to Japan this March,
we had the great fortune of having a deeper conversation with Izumita-sensei.
Several moments from our exchange left a lasting impression.
One was when he spoke about his relationship with clay:
"The creative process is like gradually adjusting the clay to an ideal state-
a state where the moisture is just right, without leaving any residue.
This adjustment isn't merely technical-it's about sensing
the material and timing the expression.
I often feel this way: I'm not shaping the clay-I'm working
with it to find that just right moment.
Another was when we asked how he became an artist.
His reply was calm, yet deeply moving:
"You can't become an artist simply because you want to.
It happens gradually, through the continuous work of being a craftsman.
This interview marks a new beginning for Round and Round Gallery,
as we hope to share more such stories with everyone.
We'll be slowly publishing more conversations with the artists.
